Difference Between Silencer & Suppressor

Difference Between Silencer & Suppressor

10th Aug 2022

It can be confusing to hear the word silencer and suppressor in different contexts because it sounds as if they should be two different things.

The fact is, however, that no matter which word is used, the person speaking is referencing the same device.

What Is a Suppressor?

A suppressor is an apparatus that is attached to the barrel of a gun with the purpose of muffling the sound of the shot.

What Is a Silencer?

A silencer is also a piece of equipment that is attached to the barrel of a gun in order to decrease the amount of sound emitted when a gun is shot.

Suppressor vs. Silencer Difference

Is there a difference between a suppressor and a silencer? Essentially, no. In most cases, the terms are used interchangeably to identify the device designed to cut down on the decibels of noise released along with the fired shot.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Suppressor?

Though the movies tend to suggest that the only reason to use a silencer or suppressor is to commit a murder without being heard by the neighbors, the truth is that there are a number of contexts in which it is appropriate and beneficial.

In hunting, for example, it pays to muffle shots fired. To use a suppressor means that there is:

  • Less noise pollution
  • Less recoil, which means a more rapid re-fire and greater accuracy
  • Less muzzle flash
  • Less damage to hearing

How Does a Suppressor Work?

A suppressor, or silencer, has a multi-step processthat helps to decrease but not eliminate the decibels of sound. After the silencer is screwed onto the barrel and the trigger is pulled:

  • The bullet enters the silencer, releasing high-pressure gas, which is one of the causes of the noise that usually accompanies a gunshot.
  • Chambers, called baffles, trap the gas, then cool it and slow it down, decreasing the pressure in the process.
  • The bullet exits the silencer at a lower volume, which cuts the sound by as much as 40 to 60 decibels.

Are Silencers Effective?

Yes, silencers, or suppressors, can lower the sound of a gunshot considerably, protecting the hearing of the shooter by blocking the sound of the shot at the muzzle rather than blocking it with in-ear or over-ear sound protection.

They can also help to reduce the amount of recoil if they are well-made as well as cut down on the muzzle flash

Does Using a Silencer Change the Accuracy of the Shot?

Some people say that using a suppressor does change their accuracy, but not all agree on how. Some say it improves their accuracy, while others say they have to adjust to get the same accuracy levels.
